RE-ENERGISING KNAPTON QUARRY WITH A RESTORATION SCHEME

In 2017 landfilling of waste ceased at Knapton Quarry, from this point we developed a non agricultural restoration scheme. No indigineous soils in the area that were suitable for supporting the site aftercare and planting plan.

We engaged with the environment agency and submitted a 200,000 tonne restoration scheme which incorporated the use of sub soils and a manufactured top soil. This soil substitute consisted of a blend of inert wastes and CLO to produce a synthetic topsoil.

 

Over the next 3 years we undertook progressive restoration of the site. Followed by the establishment of willow coppice and hardwood trees. As part of the restoration we have a 20 year husbandry scheme on site and from year 3 onwards we are expecting to take the first cut of the willow coppice as a sustainable biomass fuel.

CASE STUDY
POWERING SAVINGS WITH OUR POWERLINK BIOGAS ENGINE

In 2015, we installed our first Powerlink engine – a 250KW biogas engine. After seeing significant cost savings, we’ve partnered with Powerlink to help other businesses do the same.

Powerlink is the largest manufacturer of diesel generators in China, and they have now expanded into manufacturing bio gas, natural gas and CHP engines. 

 

As an organic waste company, reliability and efficiency are key to our operations. We’ve been running an assortment of engines for many years and have found significant savings from Powerlink, in terms of both the engine purchase price and running costs in comparison to other comparably sized engines from more established brands. Amazingly, during the time the engine has been running, we have experienced an uptime of 95%.

 

We developed a partnership with Powerlink in 2019 and are now proud to be the UK suppliers of three types of Powerlink engines: 

 

Biogas engines – traditionally used on landfill sites and anaerobic digestion plants.

Natural gas engines – very economical for industrial users due to the low price of natural gas.

Combined heat and power engines – cheaper than buying power from the National Grid plus the by-product provides heating and hot water.
